A group of college students teamed up with a local church and business to help the Douglas Elbert County Task Force over Spring Break.
Genesis Church and students from Northwest Missouri State University, with help from Lowes, enclosed the donation drop-off location at the Task Force, in downtown Castle Rock March 26-28.
The drop-off location consisted of tarps strapped over a carport providing little protection from the weather. The volunteers work year round to receive and sort through donations often in sub-freezing temperatures, snow, rain and the various Colorado weather extremes.
Now volunteers are able to work unhindered by the weather thanks to Genesis Church, the NWMSU students, and Lowes.
"I'm so excited! I never thought this would happen," said donation drop-off volunteer Kyria Joyner. "Now we can be more effective and get more done."
The Douglas Elbert County Task Force, helps thousands of people every year providing food, financial assistance and help to those in need. A major source of funding for their programs comes from the donations of local people that is sold in their Thrift Store.
"We went to various organizations [such as the Task Force] and asked 'How can we help?'" said Pastor Rand Clark, of Genesis Church. "We were open and willing to do whatever they needed."
"Jesus was a servant," said Clark. "Being a follower of Jesus means we help people and we serve in our community."
The new Castle Rock Lowes was quick to join the project providing expert advise and assistance on the Task Force project. Commercial Sales Specialist, Paul Vogelsong, arrived onsite when the work began.
"We're part of the community," said Vogelsong. "[Commercial Sales] works with everyone in the store [...] to get things done for the customer."
"This is exciting!" said Clark. "This is what Castle Rock is all about; people helping people; everyone coming together to accomplish something greater together than could be done on our own."
