When a 14-year-old went jogging June 13 on Butterfield Crossing heading toward Meadows Boulevard, something unusual happened.
As she jogged while listening to her mp3 player through her headphones, she said a man driving a tan car pulled over. He got out of the vehicle, leaving his door open and the engine running, and jogged toward her.
He yelled something to her, but her earphones kept her from hearing what he said. Unsure of his intentions, she ran home.
While the man never came within 50 feet of her, and there is no evidence of criminal intentions, this event is a good opportunity to remind residents of all ages to be aware of their surroundings and of what to do if approached by a stranger.
Here are a few tips:
-- Stay aware of the people and activities around you.
-- Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable, get away from the situation. Yell if necessary.
-- When possible, don't travel alone.
-- Avoid deserted areas.
-- Keep your cell phone with you, powered on and fully charged.
-- Perform outdoor activities during daylight.
-- Let someone know the route you are taking and when you will return.
-- Keep headphones at a volume so you can hear what's happening around you.
-- Call 911 if you feel threatened.
-- Parents should talk to children about stranger danger.
There is no indication of criminal activity during the interaction with the teen June 13, but Castle Rock Police are interested in talking with the man. The man who approached the teen is described as white, about 6 feet tall with a thin build, about 170-180 pounds, and age late 40s to early 50s.
He appeared to have unkempt reddish hair with streaks of white. He also had a long beard. The teen said he was wearing blue jeans, a white shirt, baseball cap and sunglasses.
The male was wearing blue jeans, a white shirt, a dark colored baseball hat, and dark, black "older model" sunglasses. His tan vehicle had what looked like a luggage rack on the top.
Anyone with information about the man in question should contact Detective
Kal Collins
