Doctor by day, martial arts teacher by night

It almost sounds like a classic, 1940s comic book or evening radio show hero, but there is at least one man in town that spends both his days and night helping others in need.

Dr. Jeff Albright is a unique and talented chiropractic physician in Castle Rock. During the day, he cares for people with difficult and challenging health conditions.

But once the sun goes down, Dr. Albright looks around to see if anyone is watching, rips off his clinic jacket, hides his acupuncture needles, then quickly changes into his martial arts uniform and speeds over to Castle Rock AIKIDO, the traditional, Japanese martial arts school exclusively for adults where he and his sidekick, Miho (who also happens to be his wife), are the head instructors.

At his martial arts school or "dojo," Dr. Albright suddenly changes names. No longer is he known as a "doctor," but now his title changes to "Sensei" (pronounced 'sen'-'say'). Sensei is the proper name for a Japanese martial arts instructor. Interestingly enough, the terms "doctor" and "sensei" in their original root both mean the same thing - teacher.

Although his uniforms may change from day to night, his purpose is the same: to help others in need. In his clinic during the day he most often helps people improve their physical health. In his martial arts dojo, during the evenings, he often addresses the other important areas of health and wellness like proper breathing and movement by instructing people in the traditional, Japanese martial art of Aikido.

The art of Aikido is much more than just a form of self-defense. It is a total way of life. Aikido is a philosophy and a discipline that is taught physically as a powerful martial art, but also provides non-physical benefits including stress relief, self-confidence, self-awareness, lifelong friendships and, of course, fun.

In his clinics, Dr. Albright teaches his patients how to create physical mastery of their health. In his martial arts dojo, Sensei Albright teaches his students how to create physical mastery in the rest of their lives.

Dr. Albright's days are unlike most chiropractic doctors. Due to his specialized acupuncture training in Japan and his intuitive aptitude of inter-personal communication, Dr. Albright has a tendency to attract patients not with low back pain, but with other challenging health conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, digestive disorders, and hormone imbalances.

Known best for his ability to listen to and connect with both his patients and his students, Doctor/Sensei Albright has made a significant impact on the Castle Rock community in the short year he has been here. In fact, he was voted "Best of Castle Rock 2007" for chiropractic, acupuncture and martial arts by Castle Rock Magazine.

Both his patients and students agree. "I'm much better than I have ever felt in years," says Sherry, a chronic arthritis and fibromyalgia patient who travels almost an hour each way to be treated by Dr. Albright. "I can exercise again. I walk almost two miles a day now!"

Brett, an Aikido student from Castle Rock, feels similarly, "The energy I gain from my [Aikido] practice is pretty incredible. I've also gained a heightened awareness of my surroundings and more confidence in life, in general."

The rapport Dr. Albright creates with both his patients and with his Aikido students is one of his greatest skills and assets. Sherry says, "Jeff makes me feel listened to and he's very easy to talk to. The friendly staff and tranquil Asian atmosphere create a soothing environment conducive to healing."

Phil, an Aikido student who travels to Castle Rock from Denver to train with Sensei Albright, concurs, "Jeff teaches with a humility and patience that allows students to find their way at their own pace."

Because of how beneficial Aikido is to mental health and physical fitness, it is also not uncommon for Dr. Albright to recommend the art of Aikido to some of his patients.

"People need to spend more time doing physical activities that produce stress relief and shake off negative energy," says Albright. "Aikido is a great way to achieve that while simultaneously receiving all of the other benefits Aikido provides."
