Residents can help name 3 trails/open space parcel
Contributed by: Town of Castle Rock on 3/26/2008

Three trails and a parcel of open space in Castle Rock need names, and the Town wants residents' nominations.

The first nameless trail is at Gateway Mesa Open Space, off of Colorado Highway 86 on the east end of Town. The 1.8-mile soft-surface, single-track trail overlooks Franktown and the Cherry Creek Valley. It also offers expansive views of the Rocky Mountains, ranging from Pikes Peak to Longs Peak.

The trail currently is open but hasn't yet been named.

Also in need of names are what now are known as the Meadows South and Red Hawk trails and an adjacent parcel of open space in The Meadows, all which will open this spring.

The soft-surface, single-track trails are eight miles combined. They are accessible via Coachline Road and throughout the existing Meadows neighborhood trails system and from points within the Red Hawk development.

The trails travel through valleys and ridgelines and are surrounded by grassland and Gambel oak. They offer views of the Front Range and the Town. The open space is 430 acres and surrounds both trails.

The Town is accepting name nominations for the trails through 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9. Nominations forms are available on the Town Clerk's Office page at www.CRgov.com or by calling Town Clerk Sally Misare, 303-660-1367.

All suggestions will be considered by a naming committee, which then will forward recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Commission's recommendation then will go before Town Council for final approval.

The Town seeks to choose names for facilities that advance the Town's vision of fostering a sense of community. Town facility names also should heighten awareness of Town history, celebrate the natural environment or call attention to points of pride in the community.

National Trails Day, June 7, will be celebrated at the Meadows South and Red Hawk trails with mountain biking rides led by local cyclists and a dedication of the two trails. Check www.CRgov.com closer to the event for details.
