Second annual Live Big 5K a huge success
Contributed by: Johnathan Osborn on 5/5/2008

What would you do if a loved one or family member was suddenly gone? As hypothetical as this question may seem, the Speights family had to face its cold, hard reality on July 4, 2006 when their son Nicholas was taken from them in a tragic accident.

Rather than merely grieve and move on, they decided to use the message and energy of Nicholas' life to help others. Thus, the Live BIG Fund was established.

The Live BIG Fund's first major goal is to raise money for renovation of Camp Tahosa, a Scout Camp that has been attended by three generations of the family, and one of Nicholas' favorite places to be.

Currently, the Fund is helping renovate the visitor center. One of the biggest fundraisers that the Fund uses to further this goal is the Live BIG 5k, which took place this year on May 4.

Preparations and planning for the second annual Live BIG 5k took place several months in advance. In addition to the race, a local Scout opted toput on a street safety program for the younger participants.

The day of the race arrived. Volunteers, many from Troop 780, the Speight's home troop, arrived early in the morning to set up tents and register participants.

People began to trickle in to register and recieve their shirts, numbers and gift bags. By nine o' clock there were upwards of three hundred runners and walkers eagerly lined up at the starting line. Bill Speights gave a brief address, thanking the crowd for coming and inspiring him to "Live Big." Then the ribbon was cut and the race began!

The runners and walkers followed signs and arrows along a 3.1 mile loop around Butterfield Park. Drink stations manned by volunteers gave flagging runners a big boost during the latter half of the race.

The first-place runner made the trip in twenty minutes, closely followed by a runner pushing a stroller. The rest of the pack trickled in for the remainder of an hour, heartily cheered by the onlookers and volunteers.

After the race ended and the last walker had passed the finish line, the Street Safety program started. Participants learned how to react in different traffic situations and also learned important traffic laws and regulations on a miniature grid of streets, bridges and crosswalks.
