A Town trail and an area of Town open space now have new names, and the Town is seeking names for two trails currently under construction within the open space.
Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday, May 6, to approve these two names:
- Chuck's Loop for the previously unnamed trail at Gateway Mesa Open Space
- Ridgeline Open Space for the open space on the south and west side of The Meadows
Chuck's Loop is named for the late Chuck Hewitt, who with his wife, Jan, used to own the land that now is Gateway Mesa Open Space. Parking for the trail and open space is a dirt lot on the east side of Highway 86.
Ridgeline Open Space signifies the prominent ridgeline that traverses through that property. The 430 acres of open space is accessible from throughout The Meadows and Red Hawk developments. A parking area will open later this year with the opening of Bison Park, 1390 Clear Sky Way.
In other action Tuesday, Council reopened the window for name nominations for two trails under construction adjacent to the newly named Ridgeline Open Space. The trails - which have been informally called the Meadows South and Red Hawk trails - are soft-surface, single-track trails measuring eight miles combined. They travel through valleys and ridgelines and are surrounded by grassland and Gambel oak. They offer views of the Front Range and the Town.
The Town is accepting name nominations for the trails through 5 p.m. Friday, May 16. Nominations forms are available on the Town Clerk's Office page at
www.CRgov.com or by calling Town Clerk Sally Misare, 303-660-1367.
All suggestions will be considered by a naming committee, which then will forward recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Commission's recommendation then will go before Town Council for final approval.
The Town seeks to choose names for facilities that advance the Town's vision of fostering a sense of community. Town facility names also should heighten awareness of Town history, celebrate the natural environment or call attention to points of pride in the community.
The trails are set to open on National Trails Day, June 7, with mountain biking rides led by local cyclists and a dedication of the two trails. Check CRgov.com for details.
