Town Council election results
Contributed by: Town of Castle Rock on 4/1/2008

The Council Rock Town Council next week will welcome three new members - and welcome back two incumbents - after an election that had a rare five seats up for grabs.

Come next week, Paul Donahue will represent District 1, Chip Wilson, District 4, and Joe Procopio, District 7. Mayor Randy Reed and Mayor Pro Tem Douglas Lehnen will return to their seats in Districts 2 and 6, respectively.

District 1 Councilwoman Katie Kruger and District 4 Councilman Ed Rusch did not seek reelection. Councilman Hank Lacey resigned his District 7 seat in January.

Reed and Lehnen's seats were uncontested.

Donahue, a financial adviser, said he's excited about the opportunity to serve on Council and hopes to help make Castle Rock one of the best places to live in the country.

"I think we have great opportunities to do that," he said.

Donahue earned 294 votes from residents of The Meadows in an uncontested race.

Wilson won District 4, which includes the downtown core and Castle North, by a large margin. He earned 420 votes to John Mark Lawler's 149 votes and Tom Rupert's 131 votes.

The United Airlines manager lives just outside Craig and Gould. He said he was "humbled" by voters' support, which he thinks he earned by walking the district and talking with its residents.

Procopio won a tight race in District 7, which includes Castlewood Ranch and parts of Founders Village, with 152 votes. He edged out Max Brooks, who had 136 votes, Betty Cox, who earned 122 votes, and Robert Murray, who garnered 73 votes.

The retiree, who's also a substitute teacher and lacrosse coach, has long been active in civic committees, including the Transportation Advisory Board and Planning, Public Works and Utilities commissions.

He said his close win was "the luck of the draw."

"All the candidates were top-notch and had expressed a desire to serve," Procopio said. "I hope I can live up to their expectations and serve them well."

Reed, who owns a framing business and represents District 2, which includes the Woodlands, Metzler Ranch and Diamond Ridge, earned 398 votes. Lehnen, a retiree who represents District 6 in southeast Castle Rock, garnered 526 votes.

There were 2,401 votes cast in all, which represents a voter turnout of 21 percent.

The five men elected will be sworn in at the April 8 Town Council meeting. All will serve two-year terms except Procopio, who will serve only the one year remaining in Lacey's term.

The new Council will choose a mayor and mayor pro tem - who acts as mayor in the mayor's absence - at its April 15 meeting.

Questions regarding the election can be directed to Town Clerk Sally Misare, 303-660-1367 or smisare@CRgov.com.
