Contributed by: Douglas County Sheriffs Office on 8/22/2007

In 2007, the Race-A-Cop Program awardeds ix scholarships to graduating seniors from Ponderosa, Chaparral, Mountain Vista, and Douglas County High Schools.

Candidates had to demonstrate their dedication to responsible driving; participate in an education program relating to the effects of drugs or alcohol, be a mentor to other students, or volunteer within their communities.

For the 07-08 program, applications are due by Feb. 28, 2008.

The RaceACop Program is a cooperative effort between teenagers and law enforcement officers designed to strengthen the sometimes shaky relationship between the traditional community adversaries.

The goals of the program are:

· To provide education relating to responsible driving
· To provide education relating to the effects of alcohol and drugs
· To provide a means of positive interaction between youth and law enforcement through a common interest
· To provide role models for the youth of Douglas County

To carry out the commitments made to the youth of Douglas County, the Race-A-Cop Program of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office has established a scholarship fund program.

The Sheriff's Office considers this an investment in the future and believes that their members are helping to provide deserving students with an opportunity to make a positive contribution to society as a whole.

The Race-A-Cop Program will award a minimum of five scholarships, each a maximum of one thousand dollars, to graduating seniors from any Douglas County High School or qualifying home school.
