County targeting expired license plates
Contributed by: Douglas County Sheriffs Office on 7/30/2007

Sheriff David A Weaver and Jack Arrowsmith, Clerk and Recorder, are pleased to announce their partnership in a new enforcement program to address citizen concerns about possible license plate fraud issues.

"There has been some concern over out-of-state or even out-of-county license plates and citizens who seem to have temporary plates for extended periods of time," stated Arrowsmith.

Colorado Revised Statute 423101(4) requires that a Colorado resident register their vehicle within 30 days of residency, even if their are plates from another state and are not expired.

"While there might be a very legitimate reason for extending temporary plates, said Arrowsmith, the county had no plan in place to investigate cases of abuse or fraud."

This new plan will hopefully address citizen concerns and educate those that may not realize they are violating the law. Citizens who believe a resident is violating the state statute should go to the Douglas County Web site,
www.douglas.co.us/clerk and go to the motor vehicle page.

At the bottom of the page there is a link to the form entitled "Vehicles not registered per Colorado statute."

The form should be completed and returned to the Clerk and Recorders Office. The form will be researched by the Motor Vehicle Department to determine if a possible violation exists.

If it is determined that there is a possible violation the form will be sent to the Sheriff's Office. A deputy will be sent out to the address where the resident resides and inform them that they are violating Colorado law.

"We really want to work with our citizens and educate them about this violation. We do not want to assume that they were purposely breaking the law, we want to give them every opportunity to correct the situation", stated Sheriff Weaver.

A deputy will confirm that the violation was corrected and make sure that the reporting party wasnotified of the final action.

"This is a good example of multiple county departments working together to come up with a solution for a simple violation. It also creates better communication between these departments and the community," said Sheriff
Weaver.

"I am very excited about this program and I feel that it will answer a lot of questions that citizens have inreference to license plate and temporary tag issues. With the help of our citizens, we can take a pro active approach in cases where a possible violation exists," said Arrowsmith.
