Meet your candidate: Chip Wilson
Contributed by: Chip Wilson on 3/12/2008

Chip Wilson is a candidate for Castle Rock Town Council in District 4. YourHub.com asked him to respond to a questionnaire about his interests and local issues.

My name: Chip Wilson

Age: 41

My family: Wife of 14 years - Terry, Daughter - Emily, 10, Son - Will, 7

Education: Military Law, US Army; 8 years active duty

What I do: Manager, Boeing 737 Ground School Program at United Airlines and Vice Chairman, Downtown Advisory Commission, Castle Rock

My favorite place in town to hang out: My favorite place to hang out depends on who I'm with. My kids are involved in sports and activities which take us to local parks and the recreation center and sledding at Red Hawk Ridge, my wife and I enjoy date nights at many wonderful local restaurants and my friends and I enjoy relieving stress on the greens at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course.

What I like most about living here: I love the small town, friendly atmosphere that Castle Rock enjoys. I love living in a smaller town that offers many of the amenities that you find in a larger city as well as the charm that local traditions, events and activities add to the community.

My interests and hobbies: Working for United Airlines, I am interested in all things related to aviation. I love to travel with my family, golf and ski!

My favorite thing to cook: New England Clam Chowder and anything on the grill.

People who inspired me (and how): My parents have been both an inspiration and a friend and have instilled in me the drive to do my best. My father always told me that if I was going to do something, do it well and do it right. Those words, along with the example of my parents' own high standards and professional work ethic have influenced me to strive to have those same qualities.

How I have contributed to the community: For the last two years I have had the privilege of serving the people of Castle Rock as a representative on the Downtown Advisory Commission, an experience that has been both rewarding and informative. This commission is made up of residents, business owners, and property owners from the downtown area. As a member of this commission, serving as Vice-Chairman for the last year, I have been able to build a rapport with both the town staff and other Town Council Members which I feel will be invaluable should I be elected to be on the next Council. The experience and wisdom I have gained while working as a member of the DAC has given me insight into the structure and operation of the town as well as knowledge of and the opportunity to be involved with the many projects and activities that affect a large part of district #4.

The biggest issues facing Castle Rock now:
· Responsible growth, including water resources, street improvements and future development
· Retaining and attracting businesses to increase sales tax revenue
· Transportation, including traffic flow and parking

I truly believe that the most important issue facing the Town of Castle Rock is responsible growth. It is inevitable that Castle Rock will continue to grow, some placing the population estimate in the next few years at 100,000+. Growth impacts all entities and services that residents and businesses depend on and have the right to expect. Prudent planning, forecasting, appropriation of resources and vision for all future growth needs and demands on town systems and services are all strategies that I would employ to meet these expectations. Responsible growth should not just be focused on new development. It also must include the maintenance and upkeep of current facilities and services in order to meet current, as well as future demands on the infrastructures, including, but not limited to, water and sewer resources, streets and transportation, recreational facilities and a vibrant and attractive downtown.

Why I am running: As a long time resident of Castle Rock, I am concerned about the affect that growth will have on the quality of life for Castle Rock's current and future residents and business owners. My goal as a Town Council member would be to provide and improve the services and opportunities that have attracted and continue to attract residents to Castle Rock while preserving the small town, friendly atmosphere that compels most of us to call Castle Rock "Home," keeping in mind the importance of remaining an attractive location for new business and residential development.
