Meet your candidate: Joseph Procopio
Contributed by: Joseph Procopio on 3/13/2008

Joseph Procopio is candidate for Castle Rock Town Council in District 7. YourHub.com asked him to respond to a questionnaire about his interests and local issues.

My name: Joseph Procopio (known by the kids where I "sub" within Douglas County School District as "Joe Pro")

My age: 67. I consider my age a state of mind. I am VERY active, always have been. "As young as you feel!" Or as they often say, "Older than dirt but with little erosion")

My family: Son (Joe), daughter-in-law, and grand kids (3) live in Highlands Ranch; Daughter (Jennifer), and son-in-law, and grand kids (3) live in Naperville, IL

Education: BS - US Naval Academy, MS (Operations Research), JD, LL. M.

What I do: Substitute school teacher, coach HS lacrosse, perform jail ministry, teach Sunday school, engage in volunteer civic work

My favorite place in town to hang out: On the lacrosse field or at Duke's

What I like most about living here: The People (I have lived all over the world: London, Wash DC, Vietnam, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, CA, FL, etc ... Castle Rock has the friendliest, look you in the eye and say "HI", people)

My interests and hobbies: Gourmet cooking, tutoring young people, lacrosse

My favorite thing to cook: Anything Italian (went to cooking school (short courses) in Sicily and Tuscany and here in Denver.)

People who inspired me (and how): My parents (blue collar, strong views on morality and education); my HS teachers who gave me the foundation and the willingness to aspire higher.

How I have contributed to the community: Volunteer town commissions where I have served as Chairman of the Utilities Comm., the Transportation Advisory Bd., and the Public Works Comm. Currently on CR's Planning Commission; jail ministry, and Youth Programs (Christian Teen mentor, Middle School Sunday School, tutoring)

The biggest issues facing Castle Rock now:
(1) "Smart" Growth, expanding our sales tax base with more diversified businesses while maintaining our sense of community, our "quality of life", and our historical guarantee of property rights.
(2) Transportation Issues (roads and commuter rail), and, of course,
(3) WATER ... conservation and expansion of resources.

Why I am running: Castle Rock is my home. I love it here! As I said earlier, I have lived in many places but I have never achieved the "quality of life" I have achieved here. I want to contribute to preserving what we have and improving upon it for our kids and grand kids.
