As the second major snow storm in as many weeks closes in, Castle Rock Public Works department crews are working around the clock to try to mop up the first storm and prepare for the new one.
As of Dec. 26, crews had logged an estimated 812 hours to clear 6,149 miles of roadway and apply 214 tons of sand/salt. But as the second storm threatens, crews are turning their attention to preparation.
Currently, several trucks are laying down a new product -- Ice Slicer. The product is a 50-50 mixture of sand to sit on top of existing ice and provide traction and contains a potent de-icing compound. This compound reacts with the water in the ice and produces heat. The granule melts through the ice, then continues melting the ice where it meets the road. When plows come through to remove the surface snow this time, the existing ice should scrape off the roadway more effectively.
Additionally, the Town has contracted with an independent company to use two of its large front-end-loaders and has secured an additional three loaders. This brings the snow-removal fleet to a total of eight loaders ready to carve through the snow. Fleet Services has been working with Public Works on a proactive approach to vehicle maintenance. Mechanics are now on call 24 hours a day and will be living in a motel just down the street from the garage for the next few days so they can quickly and easily get in to fix equipment damaged from hours of hard work.
Following are some ways residents can take action to help the Town provide essential services during the coming storm:
-First, the town is asking residents to forgo any unnecessary travel during and immediately following a snowstorm. As residential vehicles drive on snowy streets, they pack the snow so firmly that plow blades ride along the top. This hard snowpack then freezes over, causing dangerous driving conditions. Vehicles on the road, especially if they get stuck, also impede plows' ability to clear the streets. Therefore, residents are encouraged to stock up on groceries, prescription medications and other supplies before this storm is at full strength.
-The town is also asking residents to avoid parking on the street if possible. Street-parked vehicles narrow drive lanes, and become obstacles for snowplows and other snow removal equipment needing to pass. This is also a good way to avoid the frustration of having a vehicle become buried when the plow does come through.
