Will Douglas County set a snow record?
Contributed by: Greg Liptak on 2/2/2007

Marcia and Pat Gallagher have diligently recorded snowfall on the porch of their home at 5533 Redfern Run in Littleton each month during snow season for the past 12 ½ years.

"We picked a spot where there is no drifting on our back porch,' said Pat Gallagher. "So far, this season, we have recorded 128.5 inches of snow. This exceeds all previous years we have tracked, except for 1996-1997 (132") and 1997-1998 (156")."

Gallagher pointed out several "big dumps" that everyone would remember: 49" in April 1999 and 70" in "the big one" in March 2003. The snowfall averages in inches measured on the "Gallagher Porch" for the period 1994 through January 2007 are as follows, compared with the current snow season:

Gallagher recorded the following monthly averages for the 12 1/2 year period from 1994 through January 22, 2007: September: 1.76"; October: 8.44 "; November: 10.42"; December: 15.28"; January: 13.42"; February: 12.72"; March: 19.45"; April: 23.18"; May: 5.12".The average annual snowfall for the period is 103.54".

This season, Gallagher reported 27" for October (compared with the average of 8.44"); 11 inches for November (compared with 10.42"); a whopping 62.5" for December (compared with the average of 15.28" ) and 28" for January (compared with 13.42").

Gallagher called attention to the average snowfall for March (19.4") and April (23.1"). "With 128.5 inches already recorded for this year through January 22, if we hit the averages in March and April, our heaviest snowfall months, this season could be a record-setter."

I am a little confused. How are they going to know in Littleton if we set a snow record in Douglas County?
