Mid-Knight Reports from the Oasis

Dear Tabitha:

This is a report from the front lines written while stopped at the Oasis. Several things have happened this week of importance to the good citizens of Douglas County.

First, my owners decided to take a little vacation and asked Grandma to visit and baby sit. Now, let's get it straight. I am not a baby in the normal sense. I accepted it only because of the other cats in the house. What was distressing is that two days after the old woman arrived, her boyfriend showed up unannounced. The guy drank all of our milk so we locked him out of the house. How did we know it would get so cold that night.

The second incident here on Hysteria Lane was Ajax the Siberian Husky. For the past three months we have heard his cries and howling all night long. Seems that he is being held against his will by the next door neighbor woman. We reported her to animal control but they did nothing. The law requires that an animal have food, water and shelter but the authorities let her off the hook. I feel bad for Ajax and do not understand people. Why do people harbor animals and not take care of them? Are their white carpets so precious? I have decided to dedicate a section of my weekly report to letters from animals about their concerns. I will give advice when possible and seek outside expertise to answer others.

We have another situation developing. My buddy, Wiggins, who is a Bengal breed has gained significant weight since arriving here. At first we thought it was because of a low metabolism, but now it is obviously a bulimic disorder of the worst kind. It is due to an over consumption of Kibbles and Bits. All attempts to change his diet over to a high fiber and protein diet has failed and gastric bypass surgery is next. We are appealing for funds as the current state of vet costs are as bad as rising health care costs for humans. I just don't understand a society where public appeals are necessary when this country spends more on health care than any other advanced nation. There is something wrong not only in Denmark, but here.

Finally, a word about the history of Maine Coon Cats. Seems like 150 years ago American merchant marine sailors brought Angora cats to Maine and cross bred them with raccoons. That produced a fluffy tail and tufted ears. Most Maine Coon Cats have stripes like a tabby cat, but I am pure bred, all black. At least part of this story is true.

Well, they are telling us to get ready to leave the Oasis and go to the vet to get our shots. With spring arriving, rabies and other shots are necessary to protect all animals.

Next week, we'll talk about Girl Scout Cookies, my Trip to Santa Fe, Bird Hunting with Dick Cheney and Letters from the Animal Shelter.

Lovingly, Midnight.
