MISSIVE TO TABITHA
FROM: MID-NIGHT AT THE OASIS
RE: The Alleys and Other Assorted Eyesores of Douglas County
To be pretty honest with you, I have been pretty bored this summer. After the fireworks and ice cream on the 4th of July, what is there to look forward to. So, I decided to do a little project.
A lot of people and cats and dogs move to Douglas County and think this is the next best thing next to Mendocino and San Luis Obispo. But, what they don't realize is that Douglas County is, shall we say, "Challenged" in the aesthetics department. First, you have to remember this County is one big pile of sand. It was once the bottom of an ocean and the soil is 100ft of either sand or clay. Second, it is infested with invasive weeds and woody plants due to overgrazing before the turn of the century. All of those scrub oaks and cottonwoods everyone seems to love--you got it--invasive woody plants that should command about as much respect as chamiso or sagebrush. But I guess if you come from California or New York almost anything seems attractive.
But, what I can't get over is all these comments about how cute Parker's mainstreet is or Wilcox in Castle Rock. People just fall all over themselves about that "small town" feeling. So, bein a cat and having spent my fair share of time in alleys, I can tell you the brutal truth behind some of those false Western fronts. So, Fran has lent me his camera and Wigge and I have set out on a little trip around the county. We aim to show you a cat's eye view of the truth behind that golden village on the hill. Be prepared to be shocked. It may dispel your myths about the perfection of the world. But this is what policemen, firemen and garbage men see every day of the week. So, get a grip and see reality through the eyes of an alley cruiser cat.
Personally I think the whole county could use an urban renewal authority to remove blight and eyesores. That is why Franktown was given a "Kill-Dozer" to level places that are an eyesore. But, let's start with Castle Rock, the County Seat and place where Community Planning meets to eat.
