Date with a Camelid
Contributed by: Gretchen Matsuda on 8/21/2006

What's strong enough to carry your camping gear, fuzzy enough to make a sweater from, gentle enough for a small child to lead and totally addictive? A llama, of course!

All closet llama lovers are invited to get up close for a silky hug and learn more about these intelligent, gentle and useful animals at The Llofty Llamas 4H Club Evening With a Llama on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Douglas County Fair Grounds indoor arena. Guests can walk llamas through a simple obstacle course and talk with kids of all ages about why llamas make a great addition to the family. Admission is free and everyone is invited.

Llofty Llamas Evening With a Llama coincides with the 2006 Llamas of Central Colorado Fall Classic, also held at the Douglas County Fair Grounds. Competitions in pack, obstacle, showmanship and public relations will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2nd with the youngest llama enthusiasts kicking off the show.

Other highlights will include a youth llama costume contest and miniature llama class around midday. On Sunday, Sept. 3rd spectators will be treated to the halter show, where top area llama ranches bring their best stock for judging, starting at 8:30 a.m. There is no charge for any of the events.

For more information on the LOCC Fall Classic contact the show superintendent, Barb Harris of Wildcat Llamas at 719-275-9457.
