2008 Ducky Derby draws duck hunters
Contributed by: Monte D Tucker on 5/10/2008

Yep, duck hunters in the hundreds were creekside this Mother's Day Weekend, but not to put duck on Mom's Sunday table.

No, the avid hunters looked to claim the million $$$ prize. Alas, the pictures speak for themselves.

In spite of cool, "slightly" breezy conditions which kept concession tents at half-staff along with the flags honoring our fallen Colorado firefighters, duck hunters seeking the plastic kind persevered the entire half-mile route of the Ducky Derby creek adventure.

Darkly ominous, scowling clouds threatened to cook our duck and the 7,000 plus ducks that the Castle Rock Rotary Clubs dumped ceremoniously at 2p.m. into the creek under the Fifth Street bridge in Castle Rock. All ducks paddled away safely, to the assisted quacks of lots of boys and girls.

No doubt, it's probably the first hike many of us have had all winter. Ducks and hunters cascaded over one another as quickly-moving currents floated ducks in the water and humans along the brush-lined shores.

Only the eddys and snags slowed the ducks. Only the occasional cacti-laced pathways slowed the hunters. In the end, Ducky #6098 took the Grand Prize, ticketed to a Lisa (last name not clear on the prize board).

The Million $$$ ducks (yes, there were two in the water) numbers 231 and 4264 apparently are still hiding somewhere along the creek, safe from the blazing hopes of those who held their tickets.
