Las Vegas - WOW!
Contributed by: Bob Rotruck on 11/15/2007

Our youngest son was scheduled for a medical symposium in Las Vegas in 2004. Our oldest son, who lives in Parker, was going to meet him there for a brotherly reunion.

We (the old parents) asked if we could join them. We lived in Sarasota, FL at the time. Since we had never been and we wanted to be able to spend some time with both sons, it sounded like a great trip. Our sons figured that we would be sleeping when they would be out on the town so we wouldn't "interfere."

We drove out to Colorado to meet up with the oldest and then drove on to Las Vegas along with our two Shih Tzu dogs which got to stay at a special doggy hotel. Only two words come quickly to my mind once we were there: grandeur and opulence. When you see scenes of Las Vegas on the television, you can't begin to appreciate the magnitude and splendor of the hotels and casinos.

My wife and I stayed at the Gold Coast (more reasonably priced) and we thought it was pretty darn special. Then we visited our sons staying at the Venetian. Holy smokes, what a palace! We toured through the hotel and watched a few shows. It looked like the city of Venice complete with gondolas. The artwork and design was spectacular. Again, you have to see it in first person to truly appreciate the amazing architecture from the Venice canal to looking up and seeing the sky which was artificial since we were inside a closed building.

Out on the "strip", we visited many of the other hotels, restaurants, and bistros. Everything there was impressive. A must to go see are the Luxor, Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Mirage, New York New York, The Palms, and too many more to mention! Many of the hotels and casinos had free shows with live music, dancers, acrobats, magicians, and the living statues. How those people could stand in one position for what seemed like hours at a time was amazing. I don't think I ever saw them even blink their eyes. Of course, we went to see the Blue Man Group which our sons had seen a couple of times before. What a show! You know it is good when you don't want it to end.

Do you have to gamble? No - I didn't spend a penny on a single machine or gaming table. I will admit that my wife came away a winner by about $3.65. She hit it big on a nickel machine. But we were both winners for having been there to see what I consider one of the wonders of the world. Would I go back? Yes, in a heartbeat. It is a city that just makes you feel alive and makes your heart pound with all of the sounds and scenes. If you haven't been, you have got to go. If you have been, then you already know it is "where it is happenin' baby!"

Bob, it was good to meet you at Blue Man last night. I was going to more properly introduce myself, but since you were on the isle you got away too fast. Keep blogging! Gene Boshell, Lakewood
