Castle Rock Band Gives Life to Historical Music
Contributed by: Sheri Rich on 10/20/2006

In the late 1900s, retired Douglas County band instructor Kent Brandebery, decided to test the feasibility of starting a community band. His dream was to recreate the Castle Rock Band that had played in a gazebo by the old courthouse in the late 1890s. He wanted the new band to play the music, some familiar and some forgotten, composed from the Civil War until World War I.

He began to recruit musically inclined Douglas County residents to join his new Castle Rock Band. Amateur musicians, some who hadn't played since school, took their instruments off closet shelves, and started practicing again. Some professional musicians joined up too. Today participants range in age from 14 to the eighties and play in the new gazebo built for the band and located on the Philip S. Miller Library grounds.

Once again, citizens can enjoy a Sunday afternoon concert and hear the band play during popular community events such as the fair parade and before the annual Starlighting ceremony.

The grant money would be much appreciated to keep expanding the music library (and keep some old music fromsimply disappearing), maintaining the authentic-looking uniforms and offsetting rehearsal space costs.
