Helping premature babies
Contributed by: Suz Mitchell-Elsasser on 3/30/2007

In 2006, Warm Hearts-Warm Babies donated over 55,000 baby toddler items to hospitals and children's agencies throughout Colorado. Many of these items were for premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units located in Metro Denver.

The hospitals have told us the clothing for these tiny patients helps to keep them warm in order to facilitate growth. They also give parents a sense of normalcy among all the machines. Warm Hearts-Warm Babies has worked with the hospitals to design clothing that can be used with the needed medical equipment.

Every month, there is such a high demand for premature baby clothing that Warm Hearts-Warm Babies gives out every available item. No inventory of premature clothing is kept from month to month. Our wonderful volunteers do their best to meet the need of the hospitals, but there is always need for more volunteers. We especially need volunteers with serger machines, since this is what is used to make most of the premature clothing.

In addition to volunteers, Warm Hearts-Warm Babies is always looking for funding to purchase cotton interlocking knits. These knits are better for the baby's delicate skin. Cotton interlocking knits are becoming more and more expensive as well as extremely difficult to find.

If you would like to volunteer, donate or just learn more about Warm Hearts-Warm Babies please contact us 303-919-5413 or info@warmheartswarmbabies.org . Information is also available at our website www.warmheartswarmbabies.org . The monthly newsletter has local work groups listed, current needs and upcoming events.

Thank you for your consideration for the $1000 grant.
