Retirement is defined in the dictionary as being withdrawn or apart from the world.
This may describe retirement for some, but definitely not for the members and volunteers of the Castle Rock Senior Center.
As a private nonprofit organization with a membership of nearly 1,000 and a paid staff of only four, the Castle Rock Senior Center is dependent on its over 300 volunteers to plan, staff and run its many programs and services.
Recently the members of the Center's Sewing, Knitting and Crafters Clubs were approached by the Leadership Douglas County Class of 2007 about a special project. The "Crafty Ladies" of the Senior Center were asked to donate handcrafted items such as slippers, hats, shawls, blankets and pillows to fill a "Comfort Closet" that will be presented to Sky Ridge HospitalCancer Center.
Many of the volunteers at the Senior Center have had loved ones who fought the battle with cancer and lost. Some of the members have battled cancer themselves and are survivors. This "Comfort Closet" project seemed like a wonderful way to make a contribution to honor those who had helped them through difficult times and also a way to bring some comfort to others dealing with cancer.
The ladies gather several times each week at the Senior Center to fellowship together as they handcraft items for the project, with a prayer in every stitch. Some fabric and yarn has been donated for this project, but many more supplies are needed.
Community is very important to the seniors of Castle Rock. They spent the first half of their lives raising families and now they are looking for ways to stay active and involved in their community. The "Comfort Closet" is but one example of their dedication to helping others, and of their active contributions to their community and their world.
