Adults with disabilities deserve to have fun too!!
Contributed by: Tom Baroch on 7/23/2007

When you think of a nonprofit association dealing with disabilities, you almost always think of the kids.... and when you think of doing special events and outdoor activites you think of cute, fun loving smiling kids getting a chance to access the fun things in the community- they are the ones who capture most of the attention.

That's all well and good and as it should be. However, most often it is done at the exclusion of adults living with the same disabilities. What about the adults??

WE DESERVE to have fun too. We deserve the right to go out with our friends, have fun, socialize, eat, drink and access our favorite events and sports for an afternoon or evening with our peers. And we deserve to do it in style- in a Suite!!!

So to that end, when I get the tickets, I will first invite 11 of my adult friends involved in the Spina Bifida Association of Colorado. We will use the suite that you are giving us for the game to socialize and have fun and watch our favorite Colorado Sports team.

If there are not enough people with disabilities to go with us, we will then invite spouses and significant others. But Adults affected by Spina Bifida First!!!

Over 250,000 Americans are in the Spina Bifida Community. An estimated 70,000 people in the United States - 700 in Colorado- are currently living with spina bifida, the most common permanently disabling birth defect. Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect that happens in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column doesn't close completely.

There are 60 million women at risk of having a baby born with Spina Bifida. Everyday, an average of 8 babies are affected by Spina Bifidaor a similar birth defect of the brain and spine. Each year, about 3,000 pregnancies are affected by these birth defects.

We'll take the tickets for any game offered to us.

Thank you

If the twenty-first century is to be a time of a smarter, gentler and more politically correct America, then it is time we realize Americans with disabilities deserve to be pushed out of the back rooms and into a world of inclusion and acceptance. A baseball outing with friends is a most needed respite for these deserving adults.
