Sophie Kinsella's 'Remember Me?' is calorie free
Contributed by: Terra Marquette on 5/12/2008

Imagine waking up in a hospital bed and not remembering the last three years of your life. For all you know, Brad and Jennifer are still together! Such is the fate of Lexi Smart in Remember Me?

The last thing Lexi recalls is taking a tumble while hailing a taxi in the rain. That was 2004. Now it's 2007, and much to her astonishment, her life has gone on without her! She's now dressing in business beige, but two sizes smaller. She works out at the gym and never eats carbs.

The strangest news is that she has a rich husband. How did her former mere existence transpire into this dream life? Be prepared for some madcap adventures as Lexi attempts to answer this question.

If you're a fan of chick lit, Sophie Kinsella's newest addition is a welcome one. Best known for her Shopaholic series, the former financial journalist has also written two stand-alones: Can You Keep a Secret? and The Undomestic Goddess.

For those of us who enjoy the occasional snack, chick lit is the cotton candy of our literary world. Fluffy, but not stuffy. The advantage is that with chick lit there truly are no carbs! It makes for a great read between a couple of mysteries or literary heavyweights.

British-born chick lit is a fairly new subgenre of women's fiction. Originally called "city girl books," these quirky and humorous books have evolved into a fun-loving classification of their own. Chick lit differs from its cousins, romance and women's fiction, in a couple of important ways.

With romance novels, the relationship between the couple is central to the story and the conclusion must be a happily-ever-after ending. While there is a romantic undercurrent in chick lit, entertainment is the primary goal. A romantically happy ending is just the icing on the cake (carbs really are an important element of the story!).

Women's fiction can become somewhat serious as it explores the relationships between characters. Chick lit is almost guaranteed to produce a giggle or two per page, so be so be cautious when reading chick lit in public places!

If you are in the mood for a humorous read, you may also want to try Helen Fielding ( Bridget Jones's Diary), Sarah Mlynowski ( Milkrun), or Jane Green ( Mr. Maybe). Younger readers might enjoy authors Meg Cabot or Sue Limb.
