Brunch is the greatest invention known to man. (I guess I should give a nod to the wheel, though, as I am one of those "cart-teachers". I thank heaven daily for the wheels that give me the ability to get thirty-odd textbooks from place to place.) And I am happy to report there is a new spot in town to get that mish-mash of lunch-type, breakfast-type foods.
"The Dinner Place", as my daughter refers to Sweet Tomatoes at Park Meadows, has decided to give breakfast a try. Today, February 4, was their opening experimental day, and they did a terrific job of laying out an enviable spread.
A former student of mine who is employed there as she prepares for her May graduation greeted us. She explained what we would find by way of new breakfast additions, and off we went. We started with yogurt and granola, plus fruit toppings, and then added some of the prepared salads such as Joan's Broccoli Madness, and my personal fave, artichoke rice salad.
Over in the soup/pasta/baked potato/soft-serve ice cream/fruit bar area, we found much more than we had anticipated. There were breakfast pizzas, muffins, oatmeal with all the toppings, hot soups (though it felt downright balmy today at 40 degrees), scrambled eggs, O'Brien potatoes, a delicious zucchini frittata, and a hot pasta dish that, though I was skeptical at first, was delectable. It had scrambled eggs, feta, tomatoes, olives, and peppers in a tangy Mediterranean sauce. My husband went for thirds on that, I believe.
If there were any troubles, the one brought to my attention was my daughter's disappointment at the absence of the only macaroni and cheese she'll eat. She was quite happy, however, with the Belgian waffles and warm syrup. She passed on the fruit compotes - too bad as the strawberries were perfect; not sickeningly sweet, or boiled down to a gelatinous red mass. Iced cinnamon biscuits made for a pleasant departure from too-gooey cinnamon rolls normally found at breakfast establishments.
I was truly impressed as the weeks before, the manager had expressed his nerves at attempting this new venture. He had nothing to worry about as everything was delightful. No over-cooked and Play-dough-like eggs common in other brunch venues. No bacon or sausage swimming in grease, either. It wasn't even missed.
For their first attempt, I am already a loyalist. Who needs ice-sculptures and carved fruit bowls? We left fully stuffed, and with Sweet Tomatoes' reasonable pricing (okay, today it was free and we teachers love freebies), our wallet was also satisfied. On our frequent visits, our family of three can count on a great casual dining experience for under $20.00. Call to be sure they are going to continue at 303.790.8614
I'm certainly rooting for them, and giving them a solid "A" for effort and outcome.

Ooo, sounds dee-lish, Anthonette! I will have to venture to Sweet Tomatoes for brunch sometime. Hope to see more reviews from you.
