Singing for your supper at a wine tasting dinner
Contributed by: Michael Robinson on 6/27/2006

It isn't often that you get a chance to sing on a major radio station and get a great gourmet evening to boot. This is just what happened to Lois Henry of Lakewood, CO one Saturday afternoon. The Loan Arranger Show, which runs on 710 KNUS on Saturday Afternoons, decided to give away a couple of tickets to a Castle Pines Wine Tasting Dinner. Ms. Henry called in and sang "Some Enchanted Evening" over the phone to radio personalities, Kimosabe, HossLoanright and Stevey Maverick. Her sultry voice did the job and she and her husband found themselves traveling from Lakewood down to Castle Pines to be literally wined and dined.

Ms. Henry joined a sellout crowd that came to Patty's Cafe de France on the night before Father's Day to wine and dine on a 5 course dinner and sample four different wines from "down under" Australia and New Zealand.

Wine expert Jackie Miller of The Charmer Sunbelt Group, a premium wine distributer, gave a short course on each wine as it was poured. She told the diners about Pink Knot Rose with its lifted raspberry and cherry aromas highlighted with fragrant rose petals.

Next came New Zealand's Whitehaven SB wine , a medium-bodied wine with bursts of grapefruit, citrus and gooseberry aromas.

For the main courses of the dinner, the participants got a double sampling - Australian Riesling with combined lime, mellon and honeysuckle flarors side by side with Australian Shiraz full of dark cherry fruits, chocolate, and spicy, peppery notes.

Wine expert Miller showed the crowd how to judge a wine, twirling it against a white background to see color and clarity and observing its "legs" i.e. the way the wine runs back into the glass after twirling. Guests included Julie Thostrup and Nancy Collins of Vinos del Mundo, Larry Andrews and his wife Carolyn of The Loan Arranger Show on 710 KNUS and www.signaturedishesofcolorado.com owners Mike and Julie Robinson.

The dinner was hosted by Patty Higgenbotham who prepared the gourmet meal and the wine was provided by Susan Gomez, owner of Castle Pines' Vinos del Mundo.

Patty's Cafe' de France will host another wine and dine affair around the end of the summer. Wines will come from South Africa. For Reservations, please call 303-308-1111. Someone asked Ms. Henry if she wanted to be the next American Idol. She just laughed.
