The miseducation of our youth.
Contributed by: Marina Ezznagui on 7/31/2006

The other day I was discussing with a group of teens about and actress who is part Mexican and part Lebanese. One young gentleman has no idea what Lebanese meant. He did not know it was a country in the Middle East. He was unaware they were fighting with Isreal.

What is going on in our schools? I watched Oprah today and they discussed the crisis in American schools. I am concerned for our country's youth. Are they getting the education they will need to run the World? Will they have learned enough to balance a checkbook?

Are parents aware of the disinegration of our educational system? And if the are what can they do? What can I do? What can we do?

I see teenagers with there new blackberries, driving new cars but do they know who George Washington was? Do they understand the importance of our history? I know parents want their children to have everything they did not have but shouldn't an exceptional education be more important than the coolest Ipod.

I want to know that when I retire they will be able to run the country and help it to maintain its status as a World leader. Can they do that and still know who Lindsay Lohan is dating? I'm not sure if they can. So I am left with the question "What can WE do as a community to make sure they get the education they deserve?"

I volunteer at the Library and I see these teens come in to use the computers and to hang out with their freinds, never once picking up a book. I was taught knowledge is power, but knowledge of what, who Brad and Angelina will adopt next? HELP!!! What can we do? Please someone tell me.
