Come and listen to a construction story....
Contributed by: danette glenn-havlik on 4/21/2006

I am a Castle Rock native. I have lived in this town for all 27 years of my life. I have seen alot of changes, and with changes come construction. However, I do not believe that being a construction worker means that you have the right to be rude to anyone and everyone that you encounter. Come and listen to a Construction story~
I live near Centennial Park. There is a nice path that goes around the peremiter of the large field above the pool and park area. And when the weather is nice enough, My 7 year old daughter, 9 month old son and myself walk that route to school. The past few weeks it has been nice enough to walk and we have encountered a problem. It has not been a big problem until this morning.
If you have children and if you have pushed a monster of a stroller (the stroller / carseat combo kind) then you know that it isn't as easy as it looks. When the path is clear, everything is fine. However this morning there were 2 vehicles parked on the path. Now 1 vehicle is perhaps understandable, but 2 vehicles? C'mon now! The first vehicle I encountered was from Pate Construction Co. After struggling to get my stroller around the vehicle, and trying not to fall down the steep incline, and trying not to let the stroller slide down the hill - I WAS MAD! Cartoon-like, red faced, steam coming out of my ears mad. I decided to get a card from the guy in the truck. This guy was just sitting in his truck. Not working, or talking on the phone, or even eating lunch- just sitting. So when I approached and asked for a business card, phone number, name, or location for anyone in his company, I guess he was suprised. What suprised me more was his response- No. He didnt know who he worked for, where their offices were located, or even the phone number to the boss. Now between you, me and the fencepost- What a bunch of CRUD! Who doesnt know the phone number or location of their employer????
So after hitting that brick wall, I busted out my cell phone and started calling anyone who would listen. I called the Town of Castle Rock, the Castle Rock Police Department, the Code Enforcement Office, and 411. Let me take this opportunity to thank Jane who answers the phone at the Town of Castle Rock. Poor girl had to be sick of me by call number 3, but she was sweet as pie everytime! So thanks Jane!
After taking my daughter to school I walked back the same way I came and noticed the vehicle I had a problem with was gone. Hummmm... Strange. Anyway, after I got home I searched online for company information and found what I was looking for. Pate Construction is located in Pueblo and I made the mistake of thinking they would be in Denver. So I made a phone call to the office and talked with a guy named Bill. He was very nice and understanding. He listened to everything I had to say and within minutes of hanging up with him, a man named Chris called me. Chris is located on the jobsite here in Castle Rock and he sort of explained to me what they were doing, and he profusely apologized, and said that if there was anyhting they could do to remedy the situation, to call him and let him know. About that time an Officer from the police department showed up on my door. After telling my story again, for about the billionth time, he pretty much told me that it was too bad.
So even though I am a taxpayer (probably paying that guy's paychecks) and I have lived here FOREVER, and I am a pedestrian with a stroller and a little girl in tow, if I want to walk on the path then I just have to put up with rude men in construction vehicles parked on the walkway.
And that is why I am fed up with construction! I thought that when it finally moved off of my street, that my construction headaches were done. Turns out I will just have to wait for my headache to go away until construction season is over.

Ashley, just an FYI...Pedestrians do not have the right of way in Colorado, except Boulder, unless they are in a proper crosswalk with the correct light signal, so be careful when and where you step off the curb.

What's even funnier is the amount of taxpayer money (which you say you are so concerned about) that you wasted by having public servants have to run around responding to your whining about having to move a stroller. Take a deep breath -- it's not that big of a deal.

I with you on this, at citizens we pay to install and maintain sidewalks but people in cars seem to think they are for parking cars. I live in a community where we do not have sidewalks and I can not tell you how many strange looks, rude gestures, rude words, and near misses I have had with people in cars. I have even been hit by a car wing mirror while out walking. I thought pedistrians had the right of way in this state.

Wow, you really need to find a more constructive use of your time. You bothered both the city government and police regarding having to push a baby stroller around a truck. I'm suprised the police officer didn't just laugh at you when you told him your complaint. What really concerns me is how mad you say it made you. Perhaps you should try an anger management class or counseling. How would you react if something that actually deserved a response happens to you?

I know Danette cannot be alone. I'm waiting for things to get "interesting" at the new bridge that is just starting to be built on Douglas Lane/Crystal Valley Parkway. Anyway, does anyone else have construction gripes or comments?
