I have been saddened and concerned after reading Councilman
Hank Lacey's blog in both the Aug. 9 and Sept. 6 editions of the
YourHub.com publication. In essence, the councilman appears to be working outside the established processes in order to influence a matter of importance to him.
Mr. Lacey was elected to a most critical position in the Town of Castle Rock, that of a Councilman. As an elected public servant, it is incumbent upon him to work collegially with the other six council members and with the Town staff as a fully functioning team to serve not only his constituents, but also all residents of the town.
The operative words are "servant" and "team."
It is an honor to serve the Town of Castle Rock on the Council. It is a difficult and demanding task to professionally and responsibly assist in formulating policy and direction in such a dynamic and fast-growing community as ours.
Complications and distractions arise when one or more of the team members appear to be more focused on personal attention and/or personal agenda than on the responsibilities and direction of the team.
I realize Mr. Lacey has the right to prepare his blog even though it may reflect adversely on the Council as a whole. His position as councilman, however, brings with it a higher calling.
Mr. Lacey and all other council members have a right, and indeed a responsibility, to enthusiastically express their views on any subject brought before the Council.
When that subject matter is resolved, however, that resolution represents the position of all council members irrespective of how any one of them may have voted or otherwise expressed themselves. That is how a team functions, and how a public servant operates.
