Left Lane blues...
Contributed by: Michael Rule on 4/8/2006

To the editor,
Regarding the blog posted by Mike Bates titled "Driving carefully, so why the warning?" I would like to make the following comments. First, the speed limit is 75, not 78, and if traffic was accelerating away from him, why was he in the left lane? Obviously he knew he was exceeding the speed limit; that is why he slowed down! Second, there is a law that says you need to stay out of the left lane unless you are passing. I give the officer who stopped him kudos for doing it, and Mr. Bates should be happy to get away without a ticket.
I have lived in Douglas County for more than 25 years now, the last 10 near Monument Hill. I am quite familiar with the driving habits of commuters and others from Monument to Castle Rock. Crazy, impatient, and totally lacking in courtesy are terms that come to mind when trying to describe what I see on a daily basis. Cars are stacked up in the left lane, everyone in a hurry to get ahead of the next guy.I have seen numerous accidents in this stretch of road over the years, from minor to horrific. Recently the State Patrol has increased their visibility in this stretch of highway. Great I say, and I support them 100%!
Mr. Bates, this is an extremely dangerous stretch of highway. Why not slow down, stay out of the left lane (unless passing), and enjoy the beautiful scenery on both sides of you?
Sincerely,
Michael Rule
