You know, with the HIPAA Laws, I can not get any medical information on my husband, unless he fills out a form.
Doctors, nurses, pharmacies, hospitals must follow this law as well as health insurance companies, HMO; but yet here is a very large corporation that is just sending out other peoples' information to anybody. This is an actual incident that happened to us.
We sent the reports back to AIG, but were returned. We tried to contact AIG to express our concern over the fact that we were getting medical records for other people and that should this information end up in the hands of those who steal identities, this could pose a problem, but they refused our phone calls and e-mails that we sent.
Finally we had enough and contacted Rick Sallinger of Channel 4 New. We finally got the attention of the big corporation.
Here is the story that appeared on channel 4 News:
"AIG Insurance has apparently been sending some confidential medical records to the wrong people. A man in Castle Rock received private information for two people after he filed a claim with AIG.
"I found somebody else's medical records, complete with social security numbers, phone numbers, addresses; everything I needed to steal their identity," insurance claimant Robert Anderson said.
He sent the records back to AIG which then returned the same records to him. Then he got somebody else's medical records. They showed one person had been treated by Denver Health. There was mention of seeing a psychiatrist.
AIG told CBS4, "While we believe we have adequate safeguards in place to prevent the improper disclosure of such information, we intend to investigate this matter and take appropriate remedial action, including additional staff training."
AIG added it maintains physical, electronic and procedural safeguards to guard customers' information."
