Castle Rock resident and Rollin' Rockies third baseman Dave Corning was voted athlete of the week for his performance at the FrontierLiving vs. Rollin' Rockies wheelchair softball game which took place on July 11. Corning went 5 for 6 at bat with 7 RBI's during the game.
Corning, a Marine Corp veteran, sustained a spinal cord injury while on military base 15 years ago. Today, he is one of eighteen wheelchair athletes who make up the Rollin' Rockies wheelchair softball team which is currently ranked 11th in the country.
Outside of his athletic ability on the field, Corning is committed to helping the program raise funds so they may compete at the National Wheelchair Softball Tournament to be contested in St. Paul, Minn., this August 23-25.
"Many of our players live on fixed incomes and simply cannot afford to travel with the team," says Corning. "The self-confidence and team-building techniques one learns through playing wheelchair softball is great. I will do all that I can to get those guys out there."
Check out Corning in action at one of the Rollin' Rockies upcoming games which will take place at 10a.m. on July 29, at Jason Jennings Mile High Adaptive Field or at 6p.m. on August 1 at Coors Field Parking Lot B6.
