The outcome of Sunday afternoon's game has already been determined. In 1977, during the Denver Bronco's first playoff appearance, my mother gave birth to me. It has been said that while in labor ,between contractions, she would yell at the transistor radio "Get that pretty boy!". So, with the curse of Bradshaw on her lips, I entered the world. According to my grandfather, because of the natural stresses involved with birthing a boy, my mother's hair turned from a sleek auburn to a bright orange. She had light blue eyes that would strain and turn royal when Red Miller paced up and down the sidelines speaking under his breath to quarterback Craig Morton.
She lived a full life. Through dedicated eyes she saw the Broncos make it to six Super Bowls. She had her first heart attack on the second of John Elway's back-to-back championships. I remember playing tackle football in the backyard with my brothers, where I was always Dennis Smith. With unnatural precision my mother would open the back door and shout, "Boys, come inside the game is starting." We would stop our game, shed our snowsuits then gather in front of the television set.
During the 2001 season my mother died. Brian Griese was trying to lead a struggling team, and there was little hope. On my mother's death bed, God rest her soul, she whispered words into my ear that I will never forget. She told me with a weak voice, "The Broncos will go to more Super Bowls, don't worry. Just remember the day that you were born, that afternoon in '77 when we beat the Steelers . If in the future the Steelers play in Denver you must be at the game." My mother gasped, she closed her eyes and with a final breath she said, "Son, we will lose if you are not there."
