It's widely considered the ultimate goal for any swimmer - a chance to represent your country in the Olympic games.
For
Kelsey Totura
, of Castle Rock, that chance has become a reality. Totura, a swimmer on the University of Denver's women's swim team, recently qualified to compete in the Olympic trials, which will be held this summer in Omaha, Neb.
The Douglas County High school graduate said it's a dream come true.
"It's going to be an awesome learning experience," she said. "To go and compete against the top elite athletes is overwhelming. This is a chance to represent the United States in the Olympics. It will be fun."
Totura will compete for the top two slots in the 200-meter backstroke event. Although she remains optimistic about her chances, she's prepared for the event to be the final one in her swimming career.
Totura will graduate this year from DU.
"The level of competition will be insane," she said. "I mean, you can never say never of course, but this would be an awesome way to end my swimming career. I couldn't ask for a better way to hang up the suits."
Totura has been one of the most dominant swimmers at DU since it joined Division 1, according to women's swim coach
Brian Schrader
. Totura was named Sunbelt Conference Swimmer of the year last season and currently holds nearly all of the school's records for swimming in her events, he said.
She finished 24th last season in her first NCAA Championships in the 200-back with a career-best time of 1:58.07, according to the school.
"She has a great work ethic," he said. "She does what you ask of her and more and she really works to do what it takes to get to the highest level."
Schrader, who will accompany Totura at the trials, said he believes she has a shot at making the cut.
