A mighty showing by a small group of CSI swimmers from the ROCK swim team proves that quantity counts, but quality counts even more sometimes.
Only 10 ROCK swimmers qualified to attend the LC State Meet, competing against teams from all over the state with qualifiers in the hundreds, counting relays, yet the ROCK group managed to accumulate points in nearly every event entered, and without relay teams.
Two of the swimmers who attended State qualified to go on to the Western Zones Meet held Aug. 7 - 14 in Fresno, Calif.
Gregg Hutto (13-14 age group) and
Elizabeth Schanuel (15 and over age group).
The State Qualifying swimmers from the ROCK team that attended were:
Jehan Atoe, Gregg Hutto, Sammy Lee, Ronnie Maxey, Taylor Nance, John Pederson, Thomas Pederson, Elizabeth Schanuel, and Jenna Sherman.
Those that placed in the top 8 for their events were: Gregg Hutto (who also took first place in the state for his 100 free and his 50 free, among several other top 8 placements), Sammy Lee (8th for her 200 back), John Pederson (3rd for his 100 breast, 6th for his 200 IM, 7th for his 400 IM, and6th for his 200 breast), Elizabeth Schanuel (6th for her 800 free, 2nd for her 1500 free), and Jenna Sherman (5th for her 200 back and 7th for her 100 back).
All of the ROCK qualifying State Swimmers scored points for the team, thus, helping the team place very high with such a small group and no relay points.
The State Long Course Meet was held at the Fort Collins EPIC Center on July 27, 28, 29 and 30.
Congratulations Castle Rock Swimming!
The ROCK team is a year round USS swim team. The coaches are well seasoned, have assisted Olympic athletes, and focus on the needs of the individual swimmer much of the time. They practice at Castle Rock Rec Center 6 days a week usually between 4:30 and 8 pm. If you are interested in joining the team contact Peter O'Neill at
poneill@usa-swimming.org or call 719-963-2097. There is a one week trial period that interested swimmers are welcome to participate in. There will be a 3 week break in the season with practices starting again on the 28th of August.
