11-26-2005, Aurora, CO - The Douglas County High School Huskies Football Team soundly beat the Grandview Wolves today to advance to the 5-A Colorado State Championship Game against Mullen High School at the Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium on Saturday, December 3, 2005.
During the regular season, the DCHS Huskies' (12-1) only loss was their first game by one point. In post season play, after becoming the Continental (North) League Champions, the Huskies defeated Thomas Jefferson High School, Columbine High School and, now, Grandview High School to advance to the championship game.
At the Nov. 26, 2005 game against Grandview, the two defensively strong teams battled each other to a 0-0 tie in the first quarter. However, in the 2nd quarter, the Huskies scored twice to go into the locker room at half time ahead 14-0.
As the second half opened, it was plain to everyone in the stands that the Huskies had made the appropriate adjustments and Grandview hadn't. During the 3rd quarter, Andy Muns of the Huskies broke out of the Grandview defense to run into the end zone on a 65 yard run, making it 21-0 Huskies.
As the 4th quarter opened, Muns ran into the end zone for another 7 points making it 28-0 and the Grandview crowd quickly began deserting the stands. After another score and a field goal by the Huskies, the DCHS coach, obviously looking ahead to next weeks game at Mile High Stadium against returning champion Mullen HS, put in the Huskies' "B" team players.
As the Huskies' "B" team was matched against the Grandview starting lineup, the Wolves capitalized on the 2nd stringers and scored 2 touch downs in the 4th quarter, but all in vain. As the final gun sounded, it was Douglas County High School 38, the Grandview Wolves 12.
Douglas County High School, founded in the 1890's, has a long history in the Town of Castle Rock. At the game were high school students, their parents and their grandparents. What these families had in common was that students, parents and grandparents alike were all graduates of Douglas County High School. The New Grandview High School, being less than a decade old, had none of the history and traditions of the Huskies and it showed in the stands and on the field.
Douglas County plays defending state 5-A champion Mullen next Saturday at 2:30 pm at Invesco Field at Mile High. DCHS was recently academically rated number 240 among the 17,000 high schools in the United States of America by U.S. News & World Report Magazine.
