Grindwell Rail Jam 2 skate contest Nov. 4th
Contributed by: john magee on 10/13/2006

If you've left the house to shop recently you have noticed that the Christmas decorations are already out on the store shelves, which means cold weather is on the way. For skaters in most areas it means a long hiatus is inevitable. If you live in Douglas County though, this is not a problem. Grindwell in-door skate park will return to a 7 day schedule very soon.

To keep things going, the Grindwell Rail Jam 2 is set to go off on November 4th. Last year's rail jam was one of our best attended non-musical events. This year we are gearing up for more contestants and more sponsors. Verizon wireless is our first non-skate sponsor. We had worked with them on another event and found that they were able to add more interaction during the event by providing real time text-to-vote options that we plan to take advantage of again. This option allowed attendees of the contest to text in for their favorite skater.

Grindwell Rail Jam 2 will take place at Grindwell In door skate Park on November 4th located at 520 Topeka way in Castle Rock. You can pre-register at Fake skateboards 821 North Park Street, Castle Rock for $10.00 and $15.00 on the day of the event beginning at 1:00 p.m. Each rider will receive a contest t-shirt. For more info you can call Fake skateboards at 720.733.2840 or visit Fakeskateboards.com.

The divisions are 12 and under, 13-15, 16 and up, and sponsored. We encourage every one to enter. In the past we have had the most unlikely skaters place high scores, simply because they went all-out and gave their best. Other skaters that were already known for their ability often did not do so well either because they went for the wrong tricks or were simply too nervous to skate well.

The key to winning a skate contest is knowing how to distribute a balance of simple tricks you know you can land and look good landing them, and knowing when to go big and attempt a trick you may not be confident in but still wows the crowd and judges. Many times we have skaters enter who are skilled riders but do not know how to make the tricks flow and look good. They are easily beat by an unknown kid who lands easier tricks consistently and looks good doing it as opposed to the guy who goes big, lands the trick, but his arms are all over the place or he looks like he is going to loose control at any second.

Another advantage to winning is simple, have fun skating and let everyone know you are having fun. This sounds silly, but if you are landing tricks and laughing, smiling, and really having a good time- you look like a more confident and solid skater. This gets you points. If you land that same trick 3 times, move on to another trick. The judges will tend to stop awarding points on a trick they have already seen you stick.

The Rail Jam 2 contest is a Jam style competition. This means instead of each rider having a two to three minute run by himself, five riders at a time have 5 minutes to lay down their best tricks taking turns. This allows the skaters to catch their breath in between runs and produces more crowd pleasing action. Each rider is graded on 4 elements. 20% of their score counts towards style, 40% of the score towards skill, 30% towards consistency, and a finale 10% on park usage.

Out of each group, the best rider advances to the next round until the top three places are filled in each division. The riders will be judged on the centrally located features of the park, but can earn extra style points for their use of the bank and quarter pipes.
We hope to see all of you at the contest weather it is to compete or just support your favorite rider.

If your Church, School, or business has any interest in sponsoring the event please feel free to contact John Magee at Fake skateboards. We welcome any chance to work along side local and independently owned businesses in the Douglas County area.
