The sixth grade Silver Crown Castle View Red team had a good run at last weekend's Gold Crown Basketball Tournament.
The team capped of a stellar regular season, having finished undefeated with 13 wins. They were named champions of the South Metro Division. The team won their first game in overtime last weekend, but lost the second to the team that went on to win the championship.
They finished the tournament eighth overall, out of 108 teams from the entire front range.
The CV Red team had never played together before this year. Most of the first year team's players are sixth graders who came from the Castle Rock Recreation League. The team was formed after an open evaluation of fifth graders last spring through the Recreation Center.
They recruited an additional two players currently in fifth grade to finish out the roster, then competed together as a team for the first time last fall in a JAM prep league.
"This team's success is a testament to their hard work and dedication to each other and the game. It usually takes a few years of playing together for a team to have this kind of success," says
Scott Smeeton
, the team's coach and athletics supervisor for the Town of Castle Rock Parks and Recreation.
Many of the player's devotion may be measured additionally by their continued participation with their sixth grade Recreation Center teams.
