Golfers celebrate St. Patrick's in a whimsical way

If you are a golfer and feeling lucky, then Spring Valley Golf Club is where you'll want to be March 14 for its annual St. Patrick's Day party.

Using a four-leaf clover and green as the theme, the St. Patrick's Day party is Spring Valley's most popular and entertaining tournament of the year. Golfers from Castle Rock, Parker, Elizabeth, Highlands Ranch and Littleton all show up to play in the event.

"The tournament is casual and whimsical rather than a true competition," said Justin Cirbo, Spring Valley's head golf professional. "It is designed to encourage people to pull out their golf clubs after a long winter and get back on the golf course."

Because the tournament is just for fun, it is not your standard four-person, 18-hole scramble.

Players are given a green Volvik golf ball that they must use. If all four members of their team complete the 18 holes with all four green golf balls intact, they get four strokes taken off their overall score.

But the whimsy doesn't stop there. Players are only allowed to use four clubs, and each team is given four mulligans, or one per player. To make it even more entertaining, members of each foursome tee off from four different tee boxes on each hole.

The tournament has a 10 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday, March 14. The cost is $68, which includes greens fees, golf cart, a green golf ball, prize money and lunch. To sign up, call the pro shop at 303-646-4240 prior to March 7 .

Spring Valley is located east of Parker and north of Elizabeth at 42350 County Road 17-21.
