DC Rockers battle to second
Contributed by: DC Dolphins on 5/13/2008

It appeared as if the 12 year old DC Rockers were on their way to a title at The Battle of The Fort this past weekend, but came up just a bit short as the Billings (Montana) Regulators took home the title in a hard fought 10-0 win.

The weekend started out on a high note Saturday afternoon as the Rockers were led by an offensive charge that included a grand slam by Tyler Eickstaedt. The Rockers also had key pitching performances that kept the Longmont Tigers in check and could never mount a rally.

Paul Lazarus started off the game and notched 3 solid innings for the win. Christian Myers finished with three scoreless innings of his own, including a very nice pickoff at second base.

In the second game of the double header the Rockers ran into a tough matchup versus the Rocky Mountain Mustangs. The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning and never let go of the lead. Never a team to give up though the Rockers battled hard all the way through and had great offensive contributions form Alex Rollins with a key double and multiple knocks by Brendan Smith.

Sunday started early for the 12th seeded Rockers and the team was on a mission to get to the championship. The first game was played to perfection as Connor Seabold and Cory Nevers led the way with some great pitching against the Northern Colorado Gold and everyone on the team contributed to an offensive attack that never quit tallying a total of 11 runs.

Game 2 on Sunday was a great combination of defense and pitching. Myers threw 3 innings while only giving up 2 hits and was aided by key defensive plays by everyone.

Hayden Jones put on quite a show on the base paths stealing his way into scoring position every time and was driven home by Payden Rhees. Brett Minnick came in and shut the door against the Greeley Coyotes and advanced the team into the semifinals.

With one more game to get the championship the Rockers had to hold off the Longmont Hawks and did successfully with clutch pitching and defense. In the 4th inning with the Rockers up bat, Tyler Quintana hit a clutch single and after a fielders choice advanced him to second base he picked the right time to steal third. Catching everyone off guard, the attempt to get him sailed into left field and Tyler scored easily giving the Rockers a huge insurance run. Final of the game was Rockers 3 Hawks 1.

With that great victory the DC Rockers clinched a berth to the World Series in Steamboat Springs. Next up for the Rockers in the Pikes Peak Challenge in Colorado Springs before heading off to Cooperstown to take on 95 other great teams. As manager Shannon Eickstaedt said at the end of the tournament "this is only a small step on the way to amazing things for this group of players."
