It happened again. Not a big thing, just one of those annoyances that make one wonder what has happened to polite society. Without going in to too much detail, it involved an elevator.
It has become painfully clear that the rule of allowing others to get off the elevator before one attempts to enter has completely dissolved. What is the logic of falling over those trying to disembark?
At the zoo, girls in a rush to get on the elevator as I was exiting nearly tripped over the wagon I was pulling. The elevator wasn't going to depart without them, and even if the doors began to close there's a little thing called THE BUTTON that one can push to keep that from happening.
I've noticed it isn't just elevators, either. Actually, I taught this rule to seventh graders last year, that people moving out from a smaller space into a larger space get to go first.
Students repeatedly create traffic jams because they can't let the previous class out before they try to crowd into the room. Odd, considering one can overhear a few of them claiming they "hate" that class as they push and shove to get in the door.
The most incredible example of this impatience happened to me as I was trying to exit a bathroom stall. I only WISH I was kidding. I fully understand that as a woman "when you gotta go, you gotta go", but this was close to taking the girls-going-to-the-bathroom-in-groups thing WAY too far.
So let's review:
Step 1 - Let people off the elevator (out of smaller space) first.
Step 2 - Enter elevator (smaller space).
Step 3 - Repeat Steps 1 and 2 frequently.
Step 4 - Be complimented by redhead remarking, "Ah, chivalry isn't dead."

Hi Mrs. Klinkerman!! Its one of your seventh graders from last year... I'm on 8E now up at the high school, and I use some of the things that you tought me everyday... such as the whole letting the people coming out of the smaller space go first. It really helps clear up some of the hallway/classroom trafic. -Jessica B.

Anthonette, I feel your pain! I teach my sons allow those exiting to exit before entering. It's a common sense traffic rule. I'll help spread the word.
