Summer is beginning to fade, and once again Back to School fliers stuff the newspapers. The forecast for fashion? A good cross-section of relaxed, sporty-looking styles and borderline preppy, mock uniform. (Yes! We're getting closer!)
Boys' styles appear to be taking on a lot of Gothic designs like skulls and ornate details here and there, as well as Aztec-ish zigzag patterns. Shirts are still long, which won't elicit a complaint from me, but doth mine eyes deceive me? Could it be the jeans are a bit more tailored this year? Or did someone catch wind of something called a "belt"?
Girls' jeans don't appear to be skin-tight this season, and leggings with flats and tunic tops are a continuing trend. Patterns in this department also carry the Goth theme, but with pink accents. Short vests are all the rage, although the gold lame' number that accompanies the unfortunate Hannah Montana collection is straight out of something my mom wore to a formal ball back in the 70s.
Younger children's styles mirror their more mature counterparts with lots of sparkle and lacy detail, which designers still can't figure out aren't necessary for the mac-n-cheese set. It is refreshing, though, to see little girl models starting to look more like little girls than mini-Paris Hiltons.
The ever-delightful "stinky attitude" shirt still lingers, yet not at the degree it was a few years ago. You know - the ones that read "I'm Spoiled", or "I can only please one person a day - today is not your day". As a teacher, I always loved catching the ones with grammar and spelling mistakes, like this one on an eighth grade girl: "Don't flatter yourself - I was looking at you're boyfriend."
The plaid skirt with a collared shirt look returns, as it always does in autumn. Funny how each year designers harken back to the school uniform look, isn't it?
Despite the popular prop in the photo shoots, iPods are still not considered acceptable accessories on school grounds, just so you know.
An article in the
Denver Post
titled "July sales of clothing are a dud for retailers", stated that the economy is dictating spending habits like never before this season. In it, Lazard Capital analyst
Todd Slater
commented, "Most kids will be returning to school in last year's duds." In this case, "duds" means "clothes" for you youngsters out there.
Well now, we all just saved some cash. The way I look at it, wouldn't last year's jeans now look like the new ripped/faded/rumpled jeans in the stores?
Just a thought.
