Blog Entry 7 of 15 Rhonda's Community News Blog
My HOA is just North of Arapahoe Road at Jordan Road. We have seen alot of changes in the area. Our HOA was established in 1959. The Valley Country Club was about the only other thing out here then. Now we are in the City of Centennial and the other side of Jordan Road is in the City of Aurora. Both cities and even Arapahoe County have many new proposed developments near us. As you may have heard, Centennial is going to ask the voters to consider making Centennial a Home Rule city. If the voters say 'yes' this will give our city many positive opportunities to improve how we operate our city. So, in November, voters will be asked to elect 9 to 21 Charter Commission Members. This Commission (if elected) will have 120 days to write a 'charter' for the city. This 'charter' will be the framework for how the city will operate. In my opinion, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of the Charter Commission, so that is why you will see my name on the ballot this November. Several of my friends who are involved in the community will also be on the ballot for the Charter Commission this year. When their names have been confirmed to be on the ballot, I will share that info with you on a future posting. There are lots of important local elections on this year's November ballot. I hope each voter will make a point of being an informed voter before marking your ballot this year.

Wow, what an election in Centennial

There is so much to say about Centennial's election this past Tuesday, November 6, 2007. Two of the Ward races had opponents and two Wards didn't have opponents. The new elected officials will change the look of city council but it will be exciting to see two new faces on city council. It is also sad to loose some very good hard working council members that were either term limited or were not re-elected.

There were some surprises with the Home Rule question. The home rule question results were so close that we weren't sure which way the vote was going to go. So, the end result (but the final vote is not certified until November 19, 2007) is that the voters wanted to form a Home Rule (Charter )commission. Then the voters were asked to select up to 21 residents to serve on the Charter commission. Those votes were very close too. In fact, one seat is still undecided as of November 8, 2007due to the difference of only one vote. See, one vote DOES matter. Many of the elected charter commissioners are names you will recognize because we have been and continue to be involved in our community.

Thank you for your votes to elect me and several of my friends to be on the Charter Commission. We look forward to participating in this once in a lifetime opportunity and to be a part of history for Centennial.

The Charter Commission's first meeting was tonight, November 8, 2007. It was a very exciting and informative meeting. We learned a lot about how a good charter can be written and we even started the process of dicucssing a rough draft charter that was presented to us. Our meetings are public meetings and anyone can come to our meetings and observe. It is my understanding that we will also host at least one public hearing during our process which is limited by state statute to 120 days. The Commission will also establish a publicity committee to help keep the public informed about our process and what we are doing.

These are exciting times for Centennial, it is a great opportunity to help guide our city's future. I look forward to sharing this opportunity with you.
