Accounting students from the Community College of Aurora (CCA) will participate in the Piton Foundation's Tax Help Colorado program this year.
Tax Help Colorado is a pilot program at the CCA to provide free income-tax return preparation to lower- and moderate-income working families in Colorado. It is modeled after the highly successful Tax Help New Mexico program, which helps nearly 30,000 taxpayers each year through 40 free tax sites across New Mexico. With the successful launch of the CCA pilot program, other community colleges in Colorado will offer these accounting classes to provide more tax sites in the community.
A total of 27 CCA students took Accounting 132 and Accounting 133 for a total of three credits. The classes, which teach students income tax preparation and give them the hands-on experience running the tax site, are accredited and certified by the Internal Revenue Service.
In February, CCA will offer the free tax preparation clinics Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday's from 6 - 8 p.m. at CCA's Lowry Campus in Building 903, Room 113 (710 Alton Way).
Families and individuals in the Denver metro area who receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or who earn less than $40,000 a year are eligible to have their taxes prepared and filed electronically for free at the CCA Lowry Campus during the month of February.
Participants need to bring the following:
- All W-2 and 1099 statements
- Information on any other income
- Social security cards for all family members
- Information for all deductions such as childcare and student loans
- A copy of last year's tax return (preferred, if available)
For more information or additional eligibility guidelines, please call the 2-1-1 call center at the Mile High United Way, or Diane DiGiacomo at the Piton Foundation, 303-825-6246.
