CCA to Host Hinkley Students for Spring Science, Math, Computer and Liberal Arts Camp
(Aurora, CO) -- The Community College of Aurora (CCA) will offer a one-day camp to area high school students on Friday, April 13, 2007.
The camp, funded by a grant from the Xcel Energy Foundation, will expose students to the many different areas of study at CCA, particularly science, mathematics, computer technology, anthropology, English, and poetry.
During a single camp session, 120 freshman students from Hinkley High School will be split between CCA's Lowry and CentreTech campuses. The sixty students at the Lowry campus will sample hands-on activities as planned by the science, math, and computer technology departments. The other sixty students at the CentreTech campus will sample hands-on workshops as planned by the Liberal Arts Division, which includes the subjects of anthropology, English, and poetry.
Each student will rotate between three different workshops at each campus. Once three workshops are completed, the Lowry campus students will be bused to the CentreTech campus to join the others for a CCA-sponsored lunch.
Following lunch, the students will be welcomed by CCA President Dr.
Linda Bowman
, view a promotional science video, and listen to
Jesus Escarcega
, diversity coordinator and inspirational speaker from Aurora Public Schools.
The students will then break out into smaller groups and discuss what they learned and participate in a question and answer session about their day camp experience. This will allow students to share experiences with their peers and share excitement about their possible futures at CCA.
Lastly, students will participate in a drawing and receive gifts from the college.
