Walnut Hills Scholarship Celebrates
25th Anniversary with the Awarding
of $10,000 in scholarships.
In the past 25 years the community of Walnut Hills has awarded over $91.000 in college scholarships to graduating high school seniors who live in Walnut Hills.
Starting in 1972 with the first scholarship of $300 sponsored by the Walnut Hills Newsletter and its publisher and editor
, Diane Graham, the scholarship program has grown with the help of resident contributions to the awarding of $10,000 this year.
The four winners of the 2007 $2,500 Walnut Hills scholarships, in alphabetical order are:
Leah E. Brinks, daughter of
Kevin and
KathrynBrinks of 7459 E. Easter Dr., Centennial.
Leah was recognized as an Advanced Placement Scholar based on her completion of seven AP courses with all As in them. She has received academic achievement awards in English, Science, Spanish and Speech. She ranks in the top 1% of her graduating class and her college admission tests also place her in the top 1% of the nation.
She has served as Co-President of the Future Business Leaders of America, earning first place awards. Leah plans to attend the University of North Carolina -Chapel Hill and major in journalism and art history.
Ashley L. Harmening, daughter of
Steve Harmening and
Cathy Tucker of 7486 S. Quince Ct, Centennial. Ashley has been an active leader in the Outdoor Leadership Program where she has represented her school at the United World College and National Challenge Course Symposium. She has been a volunteer with Project Cure and an Ambassador at the Medical Center of Aurora. She ranks number 1 in her class with seven Advanced Placement Courses and perfect 800 scores on three areas of her College Board Exams. Ashley plans to attend Colorado State University with a premed major of Biology.
David Lee, son of
Bo Mai and
Haili Wu of 6839 S. Roslyn Circle, Centennial. David has been the recipient of a Varsity Academic Award each year in high school. He is described as a rather shy, quiet, but diligent and thoughtful young man. His thoughtfulness is exemplified by his concern for others.
He is an accomplished pianist, studied Karate, and attended Chinese School. David plans to attend the University of Colorado - Boulder where he will major in Electrical Engineering.
Molly A. Nowels, daughter of
David and
Carolyn Nowels of 7312 S. Quince St., Centennial. Molly has been active in sports, music, church and youth group. She has competed in cross-country, tennis and soccer. She is a member of a select girls choir. During the past three summers she has taken week-long mission trips working in orphanages, building houses and working in soup kitchens. She has completed seven Advanced Placement Courses with honor grades. Molly plans to attend California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks with a major in premed.
Each year an alternate is also selected. This year the alternate is:
Theron L. Lamb, son of
Susan Judy of 7310 S. Tamarac Ct., Centennial and
William Lamb.
Theron has been actively involved in soccer debate and DECA where he placed in state competition. He was also a state qualifier in debate. Theron has completed eight Advanced Placement Courses showing great progress. His teachers comment that, he is easy going, bright and capable with a great sense of humor.
Theron plans to attend the University of Colorado - Boulder and major in Environmental Engineering.
The Walnut Hills Community is very proud of its students and takes great pride in being able to award these scholarships to its outstanding students.
The scholarships will be awarded at the 4th of July Ice Cream Social sponsored by the Walnut Hills Civic Association.
