Student gives 'extra' scholarship to friend
Contributed by: Liz Martin on 6/27/2006

There were two Denver Tech Center Rotary Club scholarship winners this year. The club annually gives a college scholarship to a member of the Interact club it sponsors at Denver's Thomas Jefferson High School . This year's winner was Jerome Jackson, an outstanding young man who will attend CU Boulder. Shortly after he received the Rotary scholarship he received a prestigious Bill Gates Millenium scholarship for a full-ride to CU where he will study political science and history.

As proof of the kind of person he is, he insisted that he wanted to pass his Rotary scholarship along to a fellow interact member. Shanelle Jurado was awarded the scholarship and will use it when she attends Azuza Pacific University in Azuza, California in the fall where she will major in pre-law and political science. Jerome received a gift certificate from the club in recognition for his generosity.

Both students have exceptional records of service to their school and community. While maintaining his grades in four Advanced Placement classes, Jerome performed in TJ theater productions and was a member of the Drama Club, the Thespian Society, Student Council and the National Honor Society. Outside of school he is a youth deacon at his church. Shanelle served as Thomas Jefferson All-School Secretary and Treasurer, JSA president, and captain of the Speech and Debate team. She was a member of the National Forensic League, TJ Honor Roll, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, choir, served on the graduation and prom committee and plays on the girls' golf team. She is listed in Who's Who of American High School Students.

Interact is a service club for young people ages 14-18 created in 1962 by Rotary International and established in more than 100 countries. The youth clubs are self-governing and self-supporting giving Interactors a chance to develop leadership skills while learning the value of good teamwork.

The Denver Tech Center Rotary Club meets on Tuesdays at noon at the Glenmoor Country Club. For membership information visit the DTC Rotary Web site or contact Sherry Hanson at shehanson@msn.com.
