Skating is hot at South Suburban this summer
Contributed by: Jean Ray on 7/21/2008

South Suburban Parks and Recreation will host the 2008 Ice Skating Institute (ISI) World Recreational Team Championships at the Family Sports Center, 6901 S. Peoria St., Centennial and South Suburban Ice Arena, 6580 S. Vine St., Centennial, from July 27 through August 2.

These championships are the largest figure skating competition in the world and 900 competitors are registered for this year's event representing 86 different arenas in four countries with teams from Philippines, Taipei, Singapore and from half of the 50 United States. Skaters will compete in a variety of events earning individual medals as well as points toward the team championship. All competitive events are free and open to the public with the majority held at Family Sports Center.

On Wed., July 30, at 6 pm, opening ceremonies will be held at Family Sports Center with a parade of athletes followed by speeches from visiting dignitaries and the president of the ISI, Jim Hartnett. The week will culminate with an exciting, sold-out Ice Show on Friday evening, August 1. The ISIA Education Foundation, which provides college scholarships for graduating high school skaters, will host the show at South Suburban Ice Arena and feature the week's most entertaining performances as well as an appearance by the 2008 U.S. Ladies Champion Mirai Nagasu.

Don't miss the opportunity to see world class ice skating right in your community. Visit South Suburban's web site at www.sspr.org to find a schedule of competitive events.
