TAGAWA GARDENS opened its doors to the community 25 years ago and is a family owned and operated corporation serving the Denver Metro area since 1977. The facility has three and a half acres (160,000 sq. ft) of indoor greenhouses and is one of the largest independent garden centers in the United States.
However, the greenhouses at 7711 S. Parker Rd. already had a long history in the local area. Built in the early 1960's, throughout the years they supplied the local area with tomatoes, fresh cut carnations and long-stem roses. The Tagawa family purchased these greenhouses in 1976 and quietly continued to grow beautiful roses. At the time, there were just under 100,000 rose bushes providing wholesale cut roses to florists everywhere. The 1982 Christmas Blizzard crushed many of the greenhouses and the family decided to take the opportunity to change the course of the greenhouse's history. When the doors re-opened, Tagawa Garden Center & Florist was introduced to the local community.
Things were very different in those first years. Natural dirt floors and wooden tables displayed the top-quality plants grown on the premises. Only 5000 square feet of the greenhouse was open to the public. Four coworkers ran the shop. It was a very relaxed and slow-paced time, very reflective of the growth and economy. Recent years have brought more people to the local community as they discovered the beauty of the Parker area and made it their home. This growth has helped Tagawa's mature into what has become today a gathering place to provide plants, flowers, and other gardening supplies to help beautify homes and the community.
Gone are the wholesale long-stem roses, having made way for in-house production of rose bushes, geraniums, specialty annuals, perennials, container gardens, poinsettias and other crops to ensure the quality of these plants for its visitors. Today the store has grown to more than 100,000 sq. ft. and there are over 40 year round employees, and over 100 employees seasonally. Much care is taken by every coworker to provide the best and newest plants and products available. A family feeling amongst the staff is pervasive and carries over to the relaxed, warm and comfortable atmosphere found at Tagawa's. The coworker's vision statement is "to provide for our community the highest quality service, product and education, and along with this commitment, respect for our environment."
Visitors to Tagawa's can sip complimentary herbal tea and stroll through acres of an indoor and outdoor oasis of lush plants, beautiful flowers, blooming display gardens and leisurely chat with garden enthusiasts and experts about their concerns. Besides being a place to purchase plants and garden supplies, Tagawa's provides the community with an extensive, year-round schedule of garden and environment-related classes; fun family events; musical entertainment; cultural and arts demonstrations; special tours and lectures for local schools and other community organizations; and a friendly, knowledgeable and experienced staff.
