Colorado's Newest Open Space - Red Rock Canyon
Contributed by: Steve Johnson on 10/17/2007

Red Rock Canyon was purchased in 2003 by Colorado Springs to be used as open space. It lies just south of Hwy 24 near 31st Street. This 787 acre area rivals Garden of the Gods. It is mostly untouched but has had several uses over the years. There is a Rock Quarry inside the park.

In the late 1800's this area provided building materials for the Old Colorado City. Material taken from the quarries included Gypsum, building sand and sandstone blocks. The Bock family owned this land from the 1920's until the death of John S. Bock in 2002.

The access is easy and there are many trails inside this park. I visited Red Rock Canyon on October 12th and photographed many of the areas inside the park. Other photos of this park and other areas of Colorado are on my web site at
