University of Washington Freshman midfielder
Ben Johns
earned the Talon Lacrosse Player of the Week Award for Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association. Johns played varsity lacrosse at Arapahoe High School, graduating last year. His award was based on his play in two games played during late March. After going for 5 goals and 2 assists against Rhode Island, Johns dropped in 5 more goals against Texas Tech. His 12 points over two games provided the Huskies with a needed spark in two big out of league games and sent a flyer to the rest of the MCLA that the next four years may be something special in Seattle.
Ben is known as Chooch to both his college and high school teammates. The mere fact that "Chooch" ended up at Washington is almost as noteworthy as anything. Considering the schools rigorous academic schedule and difficulty in gaining out of state admission, a top lacrosse recruit from Colorado is almost as frequent on campus as a sunny day in March. Yet that may be precisely why Johns ended up a Husky. "He chose UW because he fell in love with the school,"said Fred Wilmot, his coach at Washington,"and he plays lacrosse because he loves the game. When he came here, he knew school was coming first, lacrosse second.....and for an 18 year old kid to make that type of big picture decision I find it somewhat remarkable."Even though his main desire may be academic, Wilmot has seen that Johns still finds the energy to work as hard as any of his teammates while displaying a humility and passion for the game, traits that he shares with all of his fellow Huskies.
